The ongoing dilemma is:

a) Spend time updating the journal in an Internet Cafe (if they exist, which they don't in the US!)
b) Explore the given place as expected

As you'll understand, the latter always wins but rest assured and when possible all will be updated! :)

However, you'd have noticed (in our defence) the pictures remain up-to-date most of the time - so keep the comments coming.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon... we return on 14th June!

The Ghan
- Boarded the legendary Ghan at 17:30 for the 18 hour journey to Alice Springs; the Red Kangaroo Service - otherwise known as budget class! $165 pp (with Backpacker discount) http://www.trainways.com.au/our-trains/the-ghan/the-journey.php / https://resweb.gsr.com.au/cgi-bin/booking.cgi?cl=gsr
- Tried to sleep from around 22:30; possibly the most broken night's sleep to date - extremely uncomfortable (as expected)
- Awoke around 06:30, had breakfast and continued to play cards - Big 2! We then met a lovely lady called Vivien (UK) who joined us playing cards for the remainder of the journey http://www.pagat.com/climbing/bigtwo.html

Alice Springs
- Arrived at Alice Springs around 11:30 and was taken to our hostel (free pickup): Alice Lodge - Double $48 pn http://www.alicelodge.com.au/
- Explored the town and encountered many local aboriginal people
- Visited the Royal Flying Doctors Service $6.50 pp http://www.flyingdoctor.net/
- Attended the Alice Springs Reptile Centre; a worthwhile visit - getting hands-on with nature! http://www.reptilecentre.com.au/
- At Tammy's request, sampled an Indian meal at Little India - somewhat expensive at a total of $39!
- On returning back to our hostel, we were greeted by the French couple we'd met in Adelaide - Sabine and Karim

3 Day Red Centre Safari of Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and Kings Canyon $310 pp (discounted by ~$200 pp due to Adventure Tours buying the company we originally booked through!) http://adventuretours.com.au/index.php/tour/nt/03_day_uluru_safari

Day 1: Alice Springs > Kata Tjuta > Uluru
- Awoke at 05:20 in readiness of our scheduled departure at 06:00
- Met our guide for the trip, 'Magic' - a Dutch girl!
- Visited a Camel Farm, saw Mount Connor (historically mistaken for Uluru) en route to Uluru http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Connor
- During the journey, we encountered a group of Aborigines that attempted to flag us down; though 'Magic' continued without stopping. Later, at the next fuel stop, another guide spoke to 'Magic' querying whether we'd stopped for the Aboriginals and it transpired that they offered this other group a Joey (otherwise know as a baby kangaroo)! Now, some might say at this point, that was most kind and thoughtful. However, the reason for this was that 'Mum' was being cooked on a BBQ!
- Arrived at our campsite in Uluru around 12:40 and were then greeted by the remainder of our tour group (those that flew directly into Uluru). Tour group included (21); Uwe (Ger), Shelly (UK), Carly (UK), Ryan (UK), Tom (UK), Hannas (Swi) Suzanne (Swi), Neil (UK), Gilbert (Fra), Akiko (Jap), Ekiko (Jap), etc...
- Attended the Aboriginal Centre at Uluru http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/uluru/vis-info/cultural-centre.html
- Visited Kata Tjuta (Olgas) and completed the Valley of Winds Walk; though there was no wind and it was incredibly hot! http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/uluru/activities.html
- Witnessed an awesome sunset at Uluru (Ayers Rock); accompanied with champagne! http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/uluru/ / http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/uluru/

Day 2: Uluru > Kings Canyon
- Awoke at 04:25 for a long day from Uluru to Kings Canyon
- Witnessed an awesome sunrise at Uluru (Ayers Rock)
- Incredibly disappointed to discover we were unable to climb Uluru due to excessive wind! Instead, we walked around the base of Uluru.
- Visited a salt lake - Lake Amadeus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Amadeus
- Collected some wood for a camp fire
- Arrived at Kings Canyon around 17:00 http://www.australianexplorer.com/kings_canyon.htm
- After a pleasant meal we all attempted to play the didgeridoo - some better than most! The stars were truly spectacular.
- Was amazed to discover Tammy was prepared to sleep beneath the stars in none other than a swag (Aussie name for a sleeping bag)! Though we were surrounded by Bull ants and Dingo’s howling throughout the night - it was a brilliant experience! http://www.faunanet.gov.au/wos/factfile.cfm?Fact_ID=251 / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingo

Day 3: Kings Canyon > Alice Springs
- Awoke at 04:40 and arrived at the start of our 4 hour hike around 07:00 at Kings Canyon! The Garden of Eden was particularly impressive - the only water to be seen for miles! We even encountered a lonely duckling! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_Canyon,_Northern_Territory
- Arrived back at Alice Springs around 18:00
- Met up with everyone (well those that bothered to turn-up) for a meal and drinks at the Melanka Party bar! Had a good evening out which finished with a few games of pool! http://www.melanka.com.au/party-bar.htm

Next stop: Darwin…

- Arrived around 16:00 and booked into Backpacker's OZ Guest House $70 pp(includes free breakfast +tea/coffee) http://www.backpackoz.com.au/
- Drove around the city centre and stopped at Glenelg beach resort for scenic photos http://www.australianexplorer.com/glenelg.htm
- Drove to Hahndorf to sample some authentic German culture/cuisine - why? Who knows?! Sampled the Bavarian Hotdog and washed it down with 500ml of HB at the Hahndorf Inn! Particularly expensive for lager @ $9.70 for 500ml... ouch! http://www.adhills.com.au/tourism/towns/hahndorf/ / http://www.hahndorfinn.com.au/
- Took a scenic drive to Mount Lofty for a truly spectacular sunset across the city http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Lofty_Ranges
- Returned hire car back to Hertz
- Boarded a free bus (Beeline) to peruse the city centre where I encountered a rather amusing incident - see below.

**Amusing Incident**
I frequented the toilet cubicle located in the main shopping area to "drop the kids off at the pool!" and during my stay (to my astonishment), I heard a knock at the door, followed by the words "... Come out, we need to speak to you!". I replied, "Sorry?!" No response was given. When I had finished my business, I confronted the Security Guards that were waiting for me outside! Their reply was, "Sorry Sir, we appear to have made a mistake!". I was suitably unimpressed!

- Decided to attend a barbershop to trim my ever increasing curly locks; only my second encounter of the trip! ($20)
- Boarded the bus to Glenelg; fortunately did not cost a penny since I had no change - the bus driver took pity on us! :) Visited Rodney Fox Shark Expedition; only had to pay for 1 ticket as it shut within 30 mins of entering http://www.rodneyfox.com.au/ - The journey home via the tram was interesting; we sat behind a local drunk that was abusing other passengers
- Spotted my mate Mr Andrew Ford stalking me with a new partner - poor Kim! :) Well, an impressive look-alike nevertheless! http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0066azc8 / http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0066b6ga
- Met a fantastic French couple at our hostel - Sabine and Karim
- Attended a Wine Tour of Barossa Valley including a stop at Jacobs Creek! $69 pp http://www.groovygrape.com.au/barossa-valley-tour.php
- Sampled the best ever Pizza at Good Life; Spencer Gulf Monster Prawns with double organic tomato sauce, organic red onion, fresh chili and basil. Though, the price reflected this at $36.90 (shared!) http://www.goodlifepizza.com/
- Had yet another amusing journey home on the tram - another annoying drunk local!
- Visited Haigs Chocolate factory to satisfy Tammy's appetite for chocolate! One of the only few remaining companies that still make, wrap and box by hand! http://haighschocolates.com.au/index.html
- Explored the Library which held the National Treasures Exhibition (free) http://nationaltreasures.nla.gov.au/site/Treasures/about
- Attended South Australian Museum (free) http://www.samuseum.sa.gov.au

Next stop: The Ghan to Alice Springs and a 3 Day Red Centre Safari...

Hi All

Here's our highlights from the incredible (and costly!) journey along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide:

View pictures from: http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/gallery/0003sca2

http://www.greatoceanroad.org

Day 1 - Melbourne > Port Campbell
- Picked up hire car at Hertz in Melbourne City Centre ($200); had booked an economy car but they had none available so they had to (unfortunately!) upgrade us to a Toyata Camry - shame! https://www.hertz.com.au/
- Tammy realised she'd left her bikini with Sal so I had to travel to Chadstone Shopping Centre (40 mins) to pick it up - apologies Sal! http://www.chadstoneshopping.com.au
- Eventually left around 12:00
- Visited Apollo Bay http://www.greatoceanroad.org/otways/apollobay/index.asp amongst other spectacular sights along the way to the 12 Apostles http://www.greatoceanroad.org/highlights/apostles/index.asp
- En route along the Great Ocean road - a straight, non-residential area, I gazed into my rear-view mirror and spotted a Navy Blue Commodore approaching - fast! I thought, most likely a boy racer or perhaps an undercover Policeman - surely not?! Indeed it was, the flashing blue lights soon appeared to my astonishment. I awaited the outcome - "...Are you aware you were traveling at 117Km in a 100Km zone?! "... no, Officer", I replied! He thankfully took pity on me (for some reason!), so instead of a fine of $285, he reduced it to the minimum fine of $134 - bless him! It was still a fine I could do without with and at the time, I was extremely gutted. But I guess no better place than the Great Ocean Road to get your first ever speeding ticket - something to tell the Grand Children perhaps?! :)
- Arrived at Port Campbell at around 19:30 http://www.greatoceanroad.org/portcampbell/apostles.asp
- Booked into Port Campbell Hostel. $70 per night http://www.portcampbellhostel.com.au/
- Visited the 12 Apostles - fantastic!

Day 2 - Port Campbell > Robe
- Visited the 12 Apostles again
- Stopped at many places along the way including, The Arch, London Bridge, The Grotto where we saw an Echidna and a Bandicoot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Ocean_Road
- Visited the Blue Lake which was so incredibly blue! http://www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/ / http://walkabout.com.au/locations/SAMountGambier.shtml
- Upon reaching Mount Gambier we were officially in South Australia; the landscape noticeably changed - we were now surrounded by Wine Vineyards and forests
- Arrived at Robe around 21:30 http://www.robe.sa.gov.au/
- Checked into Lakeside Manor Backpacker's - luxurious hostel accommodation within a Grand 1880's Sandstone Mansion! Probably the best Backpacker accommodation so far - a converted mansion! $71 per night http://www.lakesidemanorbackpackers.com.au/

Day 3 - Rob > Adelaide
- This stretch of the journey proved to be particularly boring in comparison to the Great Ocean Road. Tammy spent most of the time asleep!
- Arrived at Adelaide http://www.adelaide.southaustralia.com/home.asp and booked into Backpacker's OZ Guest House @$70 http://www.backpackoz.com.au/

Next installment - Adelaide, The Ghan to Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Darwin...

Here's what we did:

View pictures from: http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/gallery/0003qb0b?page=23

- Arrived in Melbourne via VirginBlue; our buddy Shane offered to pick us up at the airport - thanks bud! http://www.virginblue.com.au/ ($520 Return for 2)
- Played Squash at Melbourne City Baths and had dinner/supper with Shane http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/info.cfm?top=287&pg=2569 before returning to our second home in Melbourne - The Miami Hotel
- Went on the Neighbours Tour (because of Tammy's desire to possibly see Dr Kennedy!). And guess who the surprise celebrity star of the show was? Yes, Dr K himself! Managed to get a signed autograph for Mum and Carissa! Tour cost $40 each http://www.neighbourstour.com.au/
- Met up with Nick and Gem for a Chinese in China town - good company but shame about the food :)
- Sal kindly picked us up on Australia Day; we enjoyed the relaxing day in St Kilda. Sal even made us a truly awesome picnic - thanks so much Sal! Shane joined us all day - the boys took on the girls at Kubb (Swiss game) and yes, the boys destroyed the girls! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubb
- Later, we were joined by Andrea and her sister - we all enjoyed dinner together at a lovely Pasta and Pizza Restaurant along Fitzroy Street http://www.fitzroystreet.com.au/

Our Last Day in Melbourne... :(
- Booked a 3 day, 2 night tour of Uluru. Cost $275 each
- Attempted to meet Pete's friend Sam (http://www.travellingpete.co.uk) from Melbourne but unfortunately, en route Sam witnessed a fight and had to give evidence!
- Had a game of 10-pin Bowling at the KINGPIN Bowling Lounge in the city with Sal and Shane - proved to be very amusing. You might say Tammy is in need of some coaching :) Scores; Barry 141 / Shane 106 / Sal 100 / Tammy 36! http://www.3on3.com.au/kingpin.html
- We then said our goodbyes to a very emotional Sal! ;)
- Shane dropped us off at our hotel and presented us with a frame (with Melbourne on it) for us to put a picture of the 4 of us and a friendship plaque. Cheers Shane! And yes, Tammy proceeded to cry!

A BIG thanks goes out to Shane, Sal, Nick and Gem for everything - you've made our visit to Melbourne EXTRA special!

Hey Guys!

Here’s what we got up to in Tassie:

Pictures from: http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/gallery/0003xp7r

http://www.discovertasmania.com.au

Total mileage for Tasmania: 1966 KM

Day 1 - Hobart
- Boarded the Shuttle bus from our hotel to the airport ($15 each)
- Return flights from Melbourne to Tasmania via VirginBlue ($260 each) http://www.virginblue.com.au/
- Car hire via Europcar for 8 day ($300) http://www.europcar.com.au/
- At Melbourne airport, Tammy and I made friends with a friendly girl called Kelly (formerly from Perth but now studying, working and living in Hobart, Tasmania). Kelly kindly offered us some advice on sightseeing, etc.
- Collected our hire car from the airport and drove to Hobart
- Checked into Narrara Backpackers ($70); not a pleasant stay - amenities quite dreadful at the time! http://www.hostels.com/en/hosteldetailsnobooking.php/RecordID.5668
- Booked the tour of Cadburys for the following day (07:30!) to satisfy Tammy’s hunger for chocolate! http://www.cadbury.com.au
- Drove to Cascade brewery and booked a tour for the following day (11:00) http://www.cascadebrewery.com.au/
- Drove up to Mount Wellington for some fantastic views across Hobart http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/home/index.cfm?SiteID=405
- Dined in Salamanca (Hobart) at an excellent yet cheap Vietnamese restaurant, Vietnamese Kitchen ($8 each) http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/pacific/australia/hobart?poi=165294
- Upon walking into a neighboring fruit and vegetable shop, I was confronted from behind by a screaming girl who flung her arms around me! Amazingly, it was Kelly that had seen us from a nearby Pub – I recall Tammy being relieved! :)
- We joined Kelly and her friends for the rest of the evening; Les (partner - UK), Geoff (NZ) and Lisa (Tas). They were so incredibly friendly and helpful – Geoff even wrote down a recommended itinerary for us touring around Tasmania. Lisa mentioned there may be a possibility of booking a famous boat trip in Strahan at a discounted rate since they worked for the company that owns the boat! We had a fantastic evening – with thanks to Kelly, Les, Geoff and Lisa.

Day 2 – Hobart > Strahan
- Awoke around 06:15 and arrived at Cadburys for 07:30 ($12.50 each with VIP discount). The tour was reasonably good though not as enjoyable as HQ in Birmingham, England! The tour lasted around an hour. Tammy was not impressed with the chocolate donations – only 5 small pieces each http://www.cadbury.com.au
- Arrived at Cascade brewery in time for our tour ($16 each with VIP discount). Had a great time and enjoyed a few free sips afterwards; though nothing significant as we had a long journey to Strahan ahead of us – pity! http://www.cascadebrewery.com.au/
- Departed for Strahan around 12:30 and the scenery was truly amazing. We stopped at a number of places en route including; Lake St Clair (deepest lake in Australia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_St_Clair_(Tasmania) and Queenstown. A fantastic drive it proved to be with stunning views that rival the Western Highlands, Scotland.
- Arrived in Strahan around 18:30 and booked into Cosy Cabins for 1 night ($66) http://www.cosycabins.com.au/
- Had Fish and Chips and witnessed a truly amazing sunset
- Contacted Lisa as planned to advise we would like to book the boat trip the following day if available. Later, we called Lisa back who confirmed the booking and to my astonishment said it was a gift to Tammy and me from Lisa, Kelly, Les and Geoff. I didn’t want to accept it but Lisa said it had already been paid for. The kindness and generosity was overwhelming – the boat trip was valued around $110 each! Thank you so much - Lisa, Kelly, Les and Geoff.

Day 3 – Strahan > Cradle Mountains
- Boarded the Gordon River Cruise boat and set off around 08:30. The trip included visiting the mouth of The Great Southern Ocean, trout farms, Heritage landing and Sarah Island. A high quality buffet lunch was provided and the reflections in the river were spectacular - an experience we’ll never forget http://www.gordonrivercruises.com.au/
- We left Strahan bound for Cradle Mountains around 14:30 and arrived at 16:30. The cheapest place was the Cosy Cabins for a 4-bed DORM ($70) http://www.cosycabins.com.au/
- Having bought our National Park pass ($20), we proceeded to drive towards Cradle Mountains; the view was incredible. We went for a few non-guided walks which took around 2 hours including Lake Lilla and Wombat Pool; where we actually saw a wombat! Lesson learnt – wear appropriate footwear (i.e., not flip-flops or ‘thongs’ as the Aussies call them!) http://www.puretasmania.com.au/default.asp?pID=64 / http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/natparks/cradle/
- Visited Devils @ Cradle – a relatively new sanctuary that had 7 Tasmania Devils! We witnessed feeding time which was hilarious; the strongest Tasmanian devil would steel the piece of meat and the rest would then give chase – it was like watching The Conga Dance! http://www.devilsatcradle.com/
- Arrived back at the DORM to discover we had the room to ourselves – result!

Day 4 – Cradle Mountain > Launceston
- Got up early and drove back to Cradle Mountain to do the Dove Lake Walk (6 KM) – highly recommended! http://www.puretasmania.com.au/default.asp?pID=64
- Set off for Launceston around lunch time; stopped at various places including Sheffield (interesting murals) http://www.sheffieldmurals.com.au/ and Ashgrove Cheese Factory (k-wlaity Wasabi cheese!) http://www.ashgrovecheese.com.au/
- Unfortunately, we were unable to visit Stanley due to dreadful weather! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley,_Tasmania
- Arrived in Launcestion around 16:00 and eventually found reasonable accommodation at Centennial Hotel ($75) http://www.centennial-hotel.com.au/

Day 5 - Launceston > St Helens
- Visited Launceston's Basin Chairlift at Cataract Gorge - World's Longest Single-Chairlift span! Had a great time exploring the area and the chairlift was great! http://www.launcestoncataractgorge.com.au/
- Much to my disappointment, we were recommended a Lavender Farm - Bridestowe Estate and yes of course, Tammy wanted to visit it! It was an experience in itself trying to locate the farm - in the middle of no where springs to mind. We eventually located it with the help of a farmer who was transporting cattle at the time... In summary, the farm met my expectations but Tammy enjoyed herself which made it worthwhile – can you believe we paid for a tour?! Lavender = awful (aroma)! http://www.bridestoweestates.com.au/
- We arrived in St Helens around 17:30 and found accommodation at St Helen's Backpacker's. A good hostel it proved to be - one of the best hostel rooms so far!
- Had dinner at Pasta Resistance - reasonable value at $25 for two!
- Decided to book another fishing charter - particularly due to my disappointing performance on Philip Island! Eventually booked Barefoot Adventures through a guy called Simon - at the negotiated cost of $150 (for 4 hours - just the 3 of us).

Day 6 - St Helens > Coles Bay (plus Freycinet)
- Got up early for our fishing expedition - around 05:30! We departed from Binalong Bay and within minutes, Tammy started to feel sick! What a nightmare, the next thing was, I was playing a fish in and trying to console Tammy whilst she was sick - nice! All's well, ends well - I ended up catching a reasonably sized Australian Salmon. After two hours of sickness and tears, Tammy could not take anymore, so we dropped her off at the car and Simon and I went out for one last attempt. Unfortunately, with half an hour, I succumb - yes I was surprisingly sick. Though I must say, the Great Ocean was fairly rough that day! In summary, we spent most of the time trawler fishing and just the one fish was caught but we had a number of bites that unfortunately got away.
- We then set off for Coles Bay and booked into a hostel come caravan at Big 4 Holiday Park
- Drove to Freycinet National Park and paid the park fee of $20. We ended doing the Wineglass Bay Beach walk; stopping off at the Wineglass Bay Lookout - such incredible scenery. The beach was amazing - such fine sand; probably the best beach we'd encountered so far http://www.discovertasmania.com.au/home/index.cfm?SiteID=357 / http://www.freycinet.com.au/walks.html
- Had dinner at the Oyster Catcher - delightful Fish n Chips!
- Spent the evening watching the Aus Open Tennis and Andy Murray eventually losing to Nadal!

Day 7 - Coles Bay > Hobart
- Arrived in Hobart around 14:00 and checked into The Pickled Frog ($55) http://www.thepickledfrog.com/
- Picked up some fruit at down town Salamanca and in doing so almost picked up a parking ticket. I spotted him from afar and having ran over, managed to convince him that I was getting some change for the ticket machine! ;)
- Went up Mount Wellington again since it was a fine day - the views over Hobart were spectacular
- Had dinner at Vietnamese Kitchen again - great value food
- Met up with Lisa and had a great evening at a local pub - unfortunately the other guys couldn't make it.

Day 8 - Hobart > Port Arthur > Airport
- Departed around 08:30 and 10 minutes into the journey, Tammy discovered she’d left the (essential) Lonely Planet Australia book at the hostel! Thankfully, no one had taken it and we continued our journey to Port Arthur.
- The Port Arthur Historic Site cost $25 each; included a 40 min walking tour and 20 min Harbour Cruise around the harbour http://www.portarthur.org.au/
- It was sad reflecting on those that had died in the 1996 shooting at Port Arthur http://www.portarthur.org.au/pashow.php?ACTION=Public&menu_code=400.300
- We then departed for the airport where we dropped the car off
- Upon going through security, Tammy was randomly selected to be searched. Tammy noted that this could be undertaken in a private room so asked the question "Can I keep my clothes on?!".

Next installment - more from Melbourne...

G'day from Melbourne!

Here's a quick overview of what we saw in Melb:

View pictures from: http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/gallery/0003qb0b

- We checked-out of our hostel, All Nations in St Kilda ($27 each for 4-bed DORM) as Nick and Gemma (who we met in Koh Samui and are from Northampton – now working/living in Melbourne) kindly invited us to stay at their swanky apartment for 2 days (also located in St Kilda – next door in fact!) http://allnations.com/
- Ventured around St Kilda and the CBD with Nick (as Gemma was at work); including coffee at St Kilda Pier (nice phone Nick http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/004yr12k/g104), lunch at Nandos and a tour around the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Managed to go get Tammy in for free; 2for1 with the usual negotiations!) http://www.mcg.org.au/
- Met up with Shane (from Melbourne who we met on the tour from Perth to Broome), Hedda (from Germany who we also met on the tour from Perth to Broome) and Hedda’s cousin at O’Reilly’s
- Shane and Sal (from Melbourne who we met on the tour from Perth to Broome) kindly took us out for day including; a walk along part of the Kokoda trail located in Dandenong http://www.kokodatrail.com.au/ and had lunch at Pie in the Sky in Olinda http://www.olindavillage.com.au/dine.html. On our journey back from Dandenong, we smelt what appeared to be smoke emitting from Shane’s car! We eventually stopped and investigated and it appeared to originate from the brake discs – Shane then advised that whilst we were traveling down some steep hills, the brakes did not appear to be working very well! Anyway, Shane called the RACV who arrived and confirmed the newly replaced brake discs were now worn in due excessive use and no further action was necessary. Meanwhile, a lady drove up towards us from a car park with her horn on constantly; we were admittedly blocking the exit but we were somewhat surprised the flashing hazard lights of the recovery vehicle did not signify a fault with our vehicle! We were understandably angered by this rather rude behavior and so Sal issued the lady with sign language which led to her retreating back to the car park! http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0050psbh/g104
- Enjoyed a BBQ at Shane’s Mum and Dad’s house with Sal and Andrea.
- Stayed 1 night at Shane’s Mum and Dad’s house – thanks to all
- Further sightseeing was undertaken courtesy of Sal and Shane including; Chadstone Shopping Centre http://www.chadstoneshopping.com.au, Royal Botanical Gardens http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/, Rialto Tower Observation Deck ($12 each with VIP discount) http://www.melbourne360rialto.com.au/, Southbank Riverside – World Restaurant bar http://www.worldrestaurantbar.com.au/ and Crown Casino http://www.crowncasino.com.au/
- Stayed 2 nights at Sal’s Mum ands Dad’s House (David and Diane) – thanks to all
- Sal kindly drove us and Shane to a great neighboring resort, Sorrento. Had a great day, playing cricket (beating the Aussies – well, Shane anyway!), Frisbee and walking the Sorrento – Portsea artists trail (as recommended by Sal’s Mum and Dad). http://www.virtualsorrento.com.au/ On the return journey, Sal allowed me to drive her pride and joy Mitsubishi Lancer as she was tired. It was great to be driving again after absence for over 3 months! The perfect day was concluded with a lamb roast dinner (our first for over 3 months) courtesy of Sal’s Mum, Diane and Dad, David – thank you so much! http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0053epfp/g104
- Shane kindly took us on a day trip to Philip Island http://www.visitphillipisland.com/. We decided to book ourselves on a fishing charter ($80 Adult + $55 Child – managed to get Tammy onboard for the child rate as she wouldn’t be fishing full-time!). Unfortunately, the fishing charter was not particularly fruitful for me – the only catch being a star fish in 4 hours! :-/ http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/00543cb0/g104 I was embarrassed further by Shane catching a Gummy Shark http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0054e28a/g104 and Tammy catching 5 flat-heads http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/00545a65/g104. Following the fishing, we drove to the Nobbies and saw the famous Penguin Parade ($11.50 each – discounted as Sal gave us a 2for1 voucher; we split the discount between the 3 of us) http://www.penguins.org.au/
- Checked into the Miami Hotel ($68 per night) http://www.themiami.com.au
- Played squash with Shane and went to the first One Day Cricket Match at the MCG – England v Australia. Prior to entering the ground, managed to purchase a Barmy Army t-shirt! I was very disappointed to discover the Barmy Army were not present and moreover, I appeared to be the only English supporter there! This did not affect my enthusiasm – though I’d rather not discuss the final result, thank you… Aussies! http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/pic/0055dz1r/g104 / Meanwhile, Tammy had an enjoyable day on the Internet and spent the evening with Sal; dining at SukhoThai restaurant. Thanks to Shane’s friend Kermit who joined during the evening’s cricket and dropped us back at our hotel.
- Dined out with Sal and Shane in Lygon Street – Papa Ginos. We then we onto the London Tavern Hotel in Richmond for Sal’s friend’s birthday; this is where Sal introduced Tammy to her now favorite drink – Lemon, Lime and Bitters.
- Walked around China town and boarded a tram to the Formula One race` track, Albert Park. Took some photos in the pit lane and discovered the pits are used for 5-a-side games!
- Witnessed the resulting impact of the notorious Aussie hook-turn on Elizabeth Street…
- Had a great evening out at the Australian Open ($42 each) at Rod Laver’s stadium and saw: Serena Williams v Santa Ngelo – lasted 1.5 hours and Serena won 2-0; Marat Safin v Benjamin Becker – an epic match that did not finish until 1am and Marat was fortunate to win 3-2 having been 2-0 down
- Visited (once again) the Australian Open, this time with a full day ground pass ($29 each – access all matches except the Rod Laver stadium). We decided to visit the Vodaphone Stadium and saw some of the ladies match between V King and A Ivanovic. Decided to leave this match as wanted to get good seats for the scheduled Andy Murray 1st round match on the Margaret Court Arena. I watched the remaining sets of the D Nalbandian v J Tipsarevic match whilst Tammy queued for around 2 hours for a L’Oreal makeover! It proved to be another epic match where D Nalbandian managed to eventually recover from 2-0 and 3 match points down to win 3-2! Unfortunately, the scheduled matches leading up to Andy’s match were suspended to extreme heat and were subject to an hourly review. Tammy and I had to have 15 min shade breaks as the heat was unbearable and after 4 hours of waiting without seeing a single tennis match, I discovered (much to my disbelief) the Andy Murray mach had now been rescheduled onto the Vodaphone Stadium (where we were originally!). We quickly made our way back to stadium and saw the remainder of James Black v Carlos Moya – a great match ending 3-1 to James. Unbeknown to me, Tammy got James to sign my hat! Thankfully, we managed to meander our way to the front row and sat directly behind Andy Murray. Andy proved to be on top form as he destroyed his opponent, A Martin 3-0 (6-0 6-0 6-1). True to form Tammy managed to shake Andy’s hand and got him to sign my hat!

Next stop - Tasmania...

G'day from Melbourne!

Here's a summary of a very interesting day one in the world's top city!

- Arrived in Melbourne via Virgin Blue from Canberra (approx 1 hour) http://www.virginblue.com.au/

Upon collecting our luggage, proceeded to make our way to a shuttle bus that our hostel had advised us to board. However, we were declined entry as we had no prior booking and they were fully booked. Rather frustrated, decided to opt for another bus transfer service but this proved to be far too expensive.

So, I decided to ask random individuals if they were traveling to our destination - St Kilda. Fortunately, a family of 3 obliged (Abby, Winny and Bisrat), so we awaited for a mini-bus to arrive and we boarded. Note, prior to boarding, I was aware the anticipated taxi fare should not exceed $50. The taxi driver seemed to be exceptionally friendly and even offered to take us to neighboring Philip Island - paid though of course! However, things took a turn for the worse when I looked at the rapidly increasing meter cost and queried the driver. To our astonishment, we were paying a so called "high occupancy rate" as there were 5 passengers plus 'excessive' baggage. I challenged this and it soon turned into an argument - I even quoted the written documentation on the bus which stated a "high occupancy rate" would only be employed with 6 or more passengers! Moreover, a piece of luggage each does not translate to 'excessive' baggage! He was still adamant we had to pay the full amount.

We then arrived at our first stop for the family of 3; cost thus far - $75! And so the debate continued, to the point where the driver said he would call the Police! I reiterated the fact, we were honest people and were only prepared to pay the standard rate. He stated that we must pay in full or not at all. I then decided to call his company to establish the facts and in doing so, spoke to his direct supervisor. Needless to say, the supervisor was in agreement with me and so I handed the phone over to him. He suggested we were trying to take advantage of him because he was mixed-race, etc - so I interrupted stating I've never heard such rubbish! I naturally challenged his comments and in doing so, the driver threatened us with the Police again. I laughed and then thought, well why not indeed?! So I called his bluff and got Tammy to call the Police from the hotel while the family and I tried to reason with the driver - to no avail. Thankfully two Policmen soon arrived and I apologised for wasting their time but explained we had no alternative. One on one, we explained the problem.

Agreed, we were arguing about the sum of around $25 but it was now about the principle - we were being ripped-off! After a long discussion, we agreed to pay around $60 and then write a letter of complaint to the Taxi company for a refund of the difference - as if! The taxi driver then departed and we again apologised for wasting the Policeman's time. They sypathised with us and even suggested we pose with them for photos in the car - and so Tammy did! Unfortunately, we were still not at our intended destination. http://www.police.vic.gov.au

- Upon initially boarding a tram bound for the wrong end of the city, we eventually arrived in St Kilda at All Nations Hostel ($54 per night - 4-bed DORM) http://allnations.com/

- Spoke to Nick and Gem (who we'd met in Koh Samui) and arranged to go out for a well earned meal and beverage or two! Conveniently, they had an apartment next door to our hostel. We dined at La Roche Café and had a delightful tandoori pizza - a great night out with thanks to Nick and Gem! http://uk.holidaysguide.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-225301-action-describe-la_roche_cafe_melbourne-i

Next installment - more from Melbourne (minus Victoria's Police - well, hopefully)...

G'day All from Canberra! http://www.visitcanberra.com.au/

Though we had been advised by many to avoid Canberra, we felt obliged since it's Australia's capital city and not forgetting it's the birth place of my old buddy from work, Jeremy!

Here are our highlights:
- Arrived via Greyhound bus from Sydney ($35.50 each); took around 3 hours. Met Nick and girlfriend Trish who we originally met NYE http://www.greyhound.com.au
- Upon attempting to find our accommodation, we walked around the town centre for what seemed a life time and to my extreme disappointment, reminded me of Stevenage - and before you ask aussies, that's not a compliment! How on earth can a Capital City resemble Stevenage?! Jeremy - you have some explaining to do!
- Checked-in to our accommodation, City Walk Hotel ($70 per night); the kitchen reminded Tammy of the psychiatric ward at Lister Hospital, Stevenage http://www.citywalkhotel.com.au/
- Had an Indian meal at The Flavours of India (expensive at $45!) and yet again, met Nick and girlfriend Trish. Tammy was extremely excited since she selected chili-fry from the menu; though reportedly not as good as Maureen's! http://www.flavoursofindia.com/
- Boarded a bus (free - as the ticket machine was broken!) to Parliament Square; took a free tour around Parliament House and Old Parliament House. Return bus cost $3.00 each http://www.aph.gov.au/ : http://www.oph.gov.au/
- Had a beer at The Phoenix; though wasn't as good as reported by Lonely Planet!
- Went to the Cinema (are you surprised?!) and saw Casino Royale ($8 each)
- Visited Telstra Tower ($3.30 each) via all day bus ticket ($4.10 each) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra_Tower
- Perused the magnificent Australian War Memorial http://www.awm.gov.au/

Next stop - Melbourne...

G'day All!

Here are some highlights of our stay in Sydney:

View pictures from: http://pics.livejournal.com/bazandtam/gallery/0003rzq1

Our Arrival...
- Arrived in Sydney from Perth in around 4 hours via Qantas - arrival time 23:00
- Queued for a taxi and asked various people if they wanted to share the cost to Darling Harbour. Unfortunately, the only respondent was a young blonde lingerie model - as you'll appreciate, I was most disappointed... that Tammy was with me! ;)
- Checked into our 'budget' accommodation; Novotel at Darling Harbour (with harbour view - $199 per night). http://www.novoteldarlingharbour.com.au/
- Received cards/letters from family which made our day

The Rest...
- Visited Sydney Harbour Bridge http://www.bridgeclimb.com/ and Opera House http://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/ via boat ($5 each - from Darling Harbour). I recall Tammy stating she was unimpressed with the Opera House - "... I thought it would be bigger!". What on earth?!
- Did some window shopping around the city including; Pitt Street, George Street, etc
- Met up with Brigid and her friend, Tracy for a night out at Bondi Junction; including, Cock and Bull, Slip... arrived back around 3AM!
- Had my first hair trim at a cheap barber's ($15); ended up just being razor cut - back and sides. Seriously missing the cutting expertise of Pauletto!
- Met up with Pete's friend Jackie who kindly drove us around town and Coogee. Incredibly, Jackie received a call from Pete - I answered and posed as Jackie's 'new' boyfriend. Though, I couldn't last for long and burst out laughing - Pete was suitably impressed! Thanks to Jackie for a great afternoon out!
- Contemplated the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk; but for $200+ each (peak time due to XMAS), decided to reconsider when we return again to fly to NZ http://www.bridgeclimb.com/
- Walked to The Rocks for XMAS Eve and cosnumed drinks at The Oriental bar. Met an interesting guy, Phil who was visiting family from Byron Bay http://www.therocks.com/
- Awoke on XMAS day; proved to be our most depressing day travelling so far. Missing family/friends more than ever! :( Made the most of it by strolling around Darling Harbour and enjoyed XMAS dinner at The Avillion Hotel ($69 each). Though not quite to the standard of Mum's cooking! ;)
- Left Novotel (4 star) on 26th Dec and checked into The Avillion Hotel - 5 star! ($155 for 5 nights + $440 for NYE and $215 for NYD). Seriously expensive but worth it and still an improvement on Novotel prices over the festive period - $449 per night! http://www.avillion.com.au/
- I took a pleasant walk to The Botanical Gardens (while Tammy had a power nap!) to scout the area for the best vantage point for NYE http://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/royal_botanic_gardens
- Went up the Sydney (AMP) Tower ($22 each). http://www.sydneytoweroztrek.com.au/ Remarkably, We received a call from Abs who we could see (with the aid of binoculars) from top of the tower. Abs was staying at the Merriton Apartments with her family. We arranged to meet up that night with Abs sister, Olivia. We enjoyed drinks at Pier 26 Bar and Wakeup Sidebar - a great night it proved to be!
- Boarded a bus to Coogee ($2.80 each) and completed the 5Km coastal walk from Coogee to Bondi (3 hours) http://www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/council/parks/parks/coastwalk.asp
- Walked to Circular Quay and boarded a ferry to Manly ($13 each); walked from Manly beach to Shelly beach and enjoyed beating Tammy at cards (for a change!) http://www.manlyweb.com.au/
- Walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge for more ideas on vantage points for NYE. Considered knocking on apartment doors to appeal to their good nature - well, to find out if they fancied entertaining two poor English Backpacker's on NYE! Though I didn't knock on any doors, I did ask a few locals if they knew where the best vantage point was (just hoping they'd invite us to theirs!). Surprise, surprise, we did not receive an invitation but did receive some advice from a local that just parked his brand new Ferrari 430 - "... you should go to the jetty right beside my apartment and I'll wave to you from my lounge!). I was suitably unimpressed! Though, upon visiting the jetty, it did not seem such a bad idea - directly opposite Circular Quay and the City. We were greeted by a drunken fishman who'd just been visited by the Federal Police due to reports from locals he'd relieved himself in Sydney Harbour! The fisherman soon left and we played cards and explored further including Australia's Prime Minister, John Howard's Kirribilli harbourside mansion - though our appeal was declined by the Federal Police! Our decision on the best vantage point was made - a concrete platform beside the jetty
- Took a tour to the Blue Mountains ($89 each + $16 each for railway and cable car); including Featherdale Wildlife Park (where we had pictures with Koala's - Tammy almost cried!), viewing the Three Sisters, boarding the steepest railway in the world! http://www.sydneytoursrus.com/tours_bluemountains.html http://www.scenicworld.com.au/
- Purchased some food from Woolworths for a picnic on NYE

New Years Eve
- Awoke early at 06:15 to get to our Vantage Point early. Following a hearty breakfast, we were armed with a picnic and arrived at our destination via taxi around 08:00
- We were pleasantly surprised to see we were one of a few that had arrived early. Tammy proceeded to the concrete platform while I investigated another area. I was greeted by a friendly local lady called Jolanta who highly recommended the spot - a raised grass platform where no one could hinder our view. I agreed and called Tammy back. We pitched-up with our large velvet blanket (on loan from the hotel!) in between Jolanta and two great guys from Bournemouth - Mike and Nick.
- We had a fantastic day alongside Jolanta with her family and friends - they were so friendly and kind to us; spoiling us with luxury food and drink throughout the day! We were very fortunate to meet such a pleasant family - thank you so much Jolanta, husband Walter, daughter Natalia, son Robert and friends! We hope to meet up again on our return to Sydney.
- As midnight approached, the atmosphere was electric - we were amongst 1.8 million people about to witness the fireworks and we were not disappointment! It was a fantastic experience and although it was 16 hours in the making, was well worth every minute of it!
- The return journey back to the hotel on foot across Sydney Harbour Bridge was long, painful and took around an hour!

The remainder...
- Met up with Laura (who we met on the Esperance tour in WA) at The Australian Bar
- Boarded the Oz Trek at the Sydney (AMP) Tower (included as part of the original $22 ticket)

Next stop - Australia's Capital City, Canberra...
